Our Beautiful Lives

December 6, 2014

Do people romanticise their existence in order to give meaning to the meaningless? Even the dullest most pointless of us have to justify our lives. We spend much time reinforcing our self importance, rationalising our decisions – sometimes citing divine guidance to the most banal events – no matter how stupid – inventing our motivations retrospectively, desperately trying to see a pattern and a purpose. As I understand, our brains have evolved to be good at pattern recognition – seeing faces in clouds and Jesus in lumps of mud. Is this the trick that nature gives us to help perpetuate the common misery –  a reason to produce more and more generations of lost souls? Those few who are fortunate to live comfortable fulfilling lives may actually be happy ships borne on an ocean of pain. EKE
