Why Is The Future Considered Safer Than The Past

September 19, 2012

What proportion of the 180 billion people who once existed lived happy, contented or even comfortable lives – free from famine, war, serious illness, torture, religious mental cruelty, grief…? Why should the future be any safer than the past? (In fact, perhaps is it not more dangerous given the possibilities of indefinite life spans?) Explain. What does history tell us? Write the answer for your children. Perhaps when they are in some totalitarian future crying on the stairs “why was i born”? they can read the answer and understand and all will be well!
